Dave Perillo’s vibrant and bold illustrations draw viewers in to experience whimsical narratives. Perillo is a freelance designer from Philadelphia who has worked with clients including Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and Warner Brothers.
One of Perillo’s new pieces, which debuted at this year’s Epcot International Festival of the Arts, features the Little Orange Bird happily soaring above Adventureland with a Dole Whip in hand. A Disney family of four looks up from the bottom corner of the artwork to spot the joyful bird surrounded by bright sun rays and foliage. The Little Orange Bird appears to be looking right at the viewer, enticing them with a cool treat. The text “Home of the Orange Bird” and “Visit the Sunshine Tree Terrace” frame the artwork, further serving as a sudo-advertisement for Adventureland’s ever popular Dole Whip.
Colorful and graphic themes carry throughout Perillo’s illustrations for the WonderGround Gallery. Perillo has been working with the gallery since 2012, where he explains independent artists “create art and put their own spin on all things Disney.”
“It’s super important to find your own unique voice / style when creating your art,” Perillo said. “You want to make sure you stand out from others and be an individual. It’s okay to be influenced by other art / artists but you don’t want to end up just mimicking them.”
Perillo takes inspiration from Disney’s own Mary Blair, along with pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein, and mid-century illustrator, Jim Flora. Perillo is also “heavily influenced by vintage and retro things, 1950’s & 60’s, Mid-Century Modern styles,” and “by all the cartoons and movies I grew up with as a kid, especially old Hanna Barbera cartoons.”
These influences correlate to Perillo’s illustrations, as does his love for Disney.
“I absolutely love so many Disney movies,” said Perillo. “And going to the parks no matter how many times I’ve been there is always an amazing experience. I will say that my absolute favorite Disney thing is ‘Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.’ It’s one of the things that stuck out to me on my first trip to WDW way back in 1980 and I have forever been fascinated with it.”
